As the Great Depression arrives, not everyone is so unhappy. Nia has felt happier and freer than she has in years, maybe her whole life. Her uptight, critical mother-in-law is dead, she is single, and Edie is growing up into a teen and less demanding of her time. She can fix up the old house and do as she pleases. First thing she will do is move in Lillie. Her heart gives a little jolt at the thought. Life is good.

Savanna and Josephina

“Don’t worry, no matter how many babies I have, you will still be my baby girl. I will always love you and Judas.”

“Dear Clara, stealer of my heart. Let us make our love official,”Tristan says. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Let’s marry and spend the rest of our lives together.” Clara swoons.

“Let’s seal our love.” Tristan pulls her close to him and kisses her passionately. Clara pulls away.

“We must wait until we are married,”Clara says.

“I cannot wait for one as lovely as you. It’s fine since we are to be wed. Don’t you love me as much as I love you?” Tristan pulls her close and runs his hand down her back.

Clara jumps up and says,” Surely, if we are to spend our whole lives together than there is time after we are wed.”

“Clara, prove to me that you love me as much as I love you.”

“I love you more than anything, but we must not do this before the wedding.”

Tristan tries to convince Clara, but she stands her ground. He soon leaves and Clara cries herself to sleep.

With prohibition ending, a source of income is lost for Joseph. He tries to teach Judas the art of gambling, another source of income.

“Judas, it’s time for you to start earning your keep. You can do odd jobs for the family business. No respectable place will hire you with that hair.”

Lillie moves in. Edie gets even less attention from her mom.

“You are not a child anymore,” says Nia, “You can take care of yourself. I have to learn this new song to play tomorrow night.”

Edie and Lillie do not see eye to eye. Lillie acts as if she owns the place and sometimes bosses Edie around. They often argue.

At first, Nia and Lillie tried to hide their feelings from Edie, but they soon became careless. Edie would catch Lillie coming out of Nia’s bedroom early in the morning. They would hold hands and give quick pecks on the cheek to each other. Then Nia thinks that she has given up enough of her life to please others and society. She will do as she pleases in her home and will not hide her affection for Lillie.

After another fight wih Lillie, Edie goes to Nia for support.

“I don’t want to hear it. You will show Lillie respect. She is part of the family now. If you don’t like it, you will have your own home and can live as you please then.”

Florence and Fern

Meanwhile, things are going well with Jack and Fern. Florence is growing quickly and Fern loves being a mom.

Tristan and Clara

Things are not going so well for Clara.

Clara meets Tristan. He breaks off their engagement. He tells her that they are not a good match. Clara is devastated.

Clara heartbroken

Clara soon learns Tristan has married another woman.

She stays in bed and cries for weeks.
