Clayton wakes up in the middle of the night, again, complaining that there are monsters under the bed.
“I was trying to sleep! You have woken me up every night for the past week crying about monsters,” Jacob yells at his son.
“Jacob, he’s just scared,” Winifred defended Clayton. “Go back to bed. I will take care of him.”
Jacob had lost another job. He mostly stayed by himself and spent even less time with his family than usual. He rarely smiled. He had been in an even worse mood than normal lately.
“You coddle them too much. These children have no respect for adults. They make too much noise, the house is a mess, you are always crying. What do you have to cry about? Have you gone to war? Seen your friends get blown up? Lost your brothers?” Jacob was angrier than Winifred had ever seen him.
Winifred fails to calm him. She shouts back at him. For the first time, he strikes her. They are both stunned. What has happened to their marriage?
Jacob goes to his room and shuts the door. Winifred puts Clayton to bed, crawls in next to him, and cries herself to sleep.
In the morning, Jacob is gone. Winifred stays in bed all day and cries.
Winifred is not the only one who is unhappy. Things are not getting any better for Edie. Nia and Lillie have moved into Edith’s old room. One day, Edie is making her old bed, when she discovers a book under the mattress. Not a book, but a diary. Is it her mother’s? She waits until her mom and Lillie are out and she sits down to read. Maybe she can find out why her mother does not want to spend time with her and how to get her to love her.
Edie is shocked by what she reads. Her parents were never in love, didn’t want to marry, and only did so under pressure. Worse, Nia did not want children and only gave in due to Edith’s constant nagging about an heir. How disappointed everyone was that she had been a girl. She read on and found that her mother was attracted to girls and that she didn’t believe that her father was. Edie was in tears as she closed the journal. She felt even more unwanted and alone than she had ever felt in her life.
Winifred worries how she will keep the children fed.
“When is father coming home?” asked Calvin.
Winifred just shook her head and walked into her bedroom, closing the door behind her.
Clayton meets Jasper at the park and brings him home.
“We can’t afford a dog. Maybe in the future…” She stops and sees the joy in Clayton’s face as he plays with the dog. She shakes her head and walks in the house.
Edie begins spending more and more time away from home. At the park, she meets Tyson. They begin meeting regularly at the park. He showers her with compliments and attention. Has Edie finally found the love she so craves?
