The children are growing up, more babies are born, young love, and a death.
Constance is a sweet, happy child. Claude is more particular about who he likes.
Though twins, Calvin and Clayton share some differences. The biggest difference is that Calvin is a friendlier, more outgoing child and Clayton keeps to himself, preferring the company of animals to people. They both can be a bit gloomy, like their mother.

Winifred encourages Jacob to spend time with Constance. Constance is hard to resist. She is sweet and loving. However, the happiness doesn’t last and Jacob reverts back to his withdrawn, angry self. Disappointed, Winifred shuts herself in her room and cries.
Nia meets Lillie at the speakeasy that she frequents and plays violin at. Lillie often comes to watch Nia perform. They had much in common and Nia found her easy to talk to.
Six years after Jack’s birth, Florence is born. Jack Jr. and Fern couldn’t be more thrilled.
The time passes quickly. Fern loves being a mom. She would love to have a houseful of children. Jack III is very intelligent. He loves school, reading, and chess.
Jack III often plays chess with his best friend, Rose. They get along so nicely and Rose often volunteers to help around the house. Rose has a twin sister named Ruby.
Judas is also growing up. Things have not improved with his stepfather. He now has a baby brother, Joseph Jr. He feels replaced and spends more and more time alone in his own little world.
While visiting a museum, Clara meets Tristan. He is an older intriguing man. Clara dreams of romance and being swept off her feet. They begin meeting secretly.
“We don’t need the whole town gossiping about us,” Tristan explains the need for secrecy. “We shall one day soon be wed, but for now let it be just you and me.” He is all Clara thinks about and she would do just about anything for him.
Edith gets out of bed one morning and collapses, never to get up again. Ornery as she was, Edie was very sad at her passing. Edith had been the one to make sure she was fed, did her homework, and off to school. Now Edie was even more alone.
“Things are going to change around here now that the old witch is dead,” Nia tells Edie. “We can finally update this old house and we will have a new roommate.”
“A new roommate? Is it another kid? Are you going to finally have another baby? Maybe a new daddy?” Edie asks excitedly.
“No, No, No. No more daddies or babies,” Nia shakes her head. “My friend, Lillie, will be moving in.”
