War has begun again. Margaret signs up to be a volunteer nurse. She breaks the news to her aunt and mother.

Ruby, the unconventional twin, ready for adventure, takes the news better than Rose. Rose lists off a serious of possible bad things that could happen.

“There could be a plane crash, she could get injured, shot, break a leg, or starve. She may get lost,” Rose rambles on.

“Aunt Rose, I am not going to get lost,” she laughs.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Rose says as she wrings her hands.

“Margaret has a good head on her shoulders. If this is what she wants to do, I support her. We have never been a traditional family,” Ruby says.

Margaret smiles. Rose wipes a tear and says,”I support you. I just will worry about you. You will make a wonderful nurse.”

Margaret isn’t the only one going to be a nurse in the war. Holly, too, will soon leave. She hugs Constance goodbye. She is excited to get a chance to practice medicine.

Nursing feels natural to Holly. Though it is difficult to see their suffering, she enjoys caring for the soldiers. She is more determined to practice medicine when she returns home.

Meanwhile, Henry had dropped out of school. He proposed to Isla and they quickly married. Sometimes he wondered why he had married Isla, whether it was a competition or to prove to himself that he was good enough to win.

Henry had a low paying job and they had little money. Isla, too, dropped out of school. Their parents helped them get a small house and some furniture.

Henry remembered his parents marriage and expected to have the same. They had a traditional marriage. His father worked and his mother cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. His father made the rules and Henry would too.

To Henry’s dismay, Isla was not much of a cook and an even worse housekeeper. She preferred to spend her time socializing. While Henry was at work, she would invite friends and neighbors over.

Henry comes home to a mediocre meal, messy house, and people in his home. After he walks them out, he tries to explain what he expects from her once again.

Henry invited Harvey over. Though he was still angry, Harvey hoped it was to make amends. It appeared to be more of to show off. He touched Isla often and gushed about how wonderful things were. Harvey left angry.

It didn’t take long before Isla was pregnant. While Henry was not too happy about it at first, he soon warmed up to the idea. Maybe Isla would begin to take marriage seriously, stop socializing so much and start cooking.

Harvey stops by to check on Isla.

“Oh,” she cries,”the baby just kicked. Want to feel?”

“Um, okay,” says Harvey. Harvey smiles at Isla as he feels the baby kick.

Henry visits his childhood home. He is surprised to see his mother at the table. He sits down and looks at Harley.

“What’s going on here? What is she doing here?”

After her husband died, Clara decided to get back in her children’s lives for good this time. Surely, they would welcome her back. They had a good childhood with Constance. Harley and Harvey hardly know their mother. They were only toddlers when she left.

“I am so sorry for what I did. I know it wasn’t right. I am back know for good and I hope that you can find it in your hearts to forgive me,” Clara sobs.

Harley pats her hand and says, ” I forgive you. I don’t understand why you did what you did, but I do forgive you and want to get to know you.”

Clara smiles. Henry bangs his fists on the table.

“Are you just going to forget what she has done!” He snaps,” are you going to let a few tears erase all the misery she has caused? She does not deserve forgiveness. She abandoned us. Left us for some man. Where was she when we were growing up? Where was she when we needed her?”

“She was lonely after Dad died,” says Harley, “she deserves love, too.”

“She had love. She had us, but we weren’t good enough,” Henry shouts. He jumps up and storms out of the room.

Clara bursts into tears as Harley comforts her.

“I want to make it up to you. I promise to be in your life from now on,” Clara sobs.

“Can you believe this?” Henry rubs his temples. ” I can’t believe she thinks that she can waltz back in here after what she has done.”

If Henry is looking for an alliance, he will not find it in Harvey. Harvey is still angry about Henry and Isla.

“Hmm, sounds familiar,” he mumbles.

“Don’t tell me you forgive her too,” Henry accuses.

“At least she can apologize when she has done something wrong,” Henry says.

Henry shakes his head, walks out, and slams the door.
