Constance helps out Clara as often as she can. She returns home to a childless home, a home without the cries of mama, the laughter of a toddler, the hug of a child. Sometimes when she cannot sleep, Constance will sit in the child’s bedroom and weep. She wants to be a mother more than anything, but Cayden denies her. He rarely shows her any affection and she feels more like a maid than a wife.

Cayden looks at the child’s room with disgust. He wishes Constance would give up the ridiculous notion of motherhood. Why, she should be grateful that he did not force her to produce child after child. She should want to dote on him, not her sister’s tiresome brood. She spent more time and affection on them. She should be home being a proper wife. Maybe he had misjudged her. True she did provide him delicious meals and a clean home, but she was too prone to tears and would not give up her desire for a baby. She was not getting one, not from him.

Joseph, on the other hand, was a proud father. He had set up an inheritance for each of the three children after Joe was born. He hadn’t wanted to include Judas, but Savanna insisted and he wanted her to be happy. Besides, he figured that as strange as Judas was, some tragedy was inevitable to befall him. He did not imagine that any girl would fall for him or that he would produce an heir.

When Josephina insisted on marrying that idiot, Daniel, Joseph knew it was time to include her boys in the inheritance. Daniel was a fool and would not be able to adequately provide for his grandsons thought Joseph. He was tempted to send some of his guys out to rough him up and he would if not for the fact that Josephina would be furious with him. A tough criminal he may be, but when it came to Josephina or Savanna he became a softie.

So when it came time to change his will, he was forced to hear Savanna’s wishes.

“Don’t forget to include Judas’s son, Kurt,” Savanna reminded him.

“Why? You rarely even get to see him. His mother won’t even let him come to the house. She acts as if her precious son steps foot in this house, we will corrupt him.” Joseph complained.

“He is still my grandson. I want to know that he is cared for. It’s the least I can do for Judas.” Savanna wipes away a tear. She wishes that she had more of a relationship with Kurt, but Ruby avoids her and keeps the boy away except for a brief visit at Christmas or his birthday. She promptly gives Ruby a sizable check to provide for the boy. She doesn’t understand why she keeps him away.

“If it means that much to you,” Joseph reluctantly agrees.

One evening at dinnertime Joe says he has an announcement.

“I signed up to fight in the war,” he says.

“What?” cries Savanna, “You do not need to fight. It’s dangerous. Your brother died in the war!”

“Joe, we can easily fix this. We have the means,” says his father.

“Will you get your own gun?” asks Joey excitedly.

“Guns are scary,” cries Angelo, “You could get shot.”

“I’m going. I will be fine. It will be a new adventure,” Joe says.

Savanna gets up and goes to her room closing the door behind her.

Savanna and Joseph try to talk Joe out of going, but they cannot change his mind.
