Hooverville was a shanty town built during the great depression. Over 15 million people were out of work. Hovervilles were made out of different materials, such as, cardboard, paper, tin, lumber, etc and may have hundreds of people living in the campground. Edie was one such person. They often grew their own vegetables. Sickness was common. It was a difficult life, but the harsh conditions helped keep her mind off her heartbreak.

After having Grace, Edie knew she couldn’t return home. She knew Grace would be cared for, but it ripped her heart out to part with her.

As for seeing her mother, she didn’t care to. Did her mother care about her feelings? No. She heard from her once while she was away. She didn’t know if she ever wanted to see her again.

She met a girl named, Tessa. She invited Edie to come stay at their shantytown. She was welcomed by Tessa’s friends, Aaron, August, and David.

It wasn’t easy. They grew vegetables to have something to eat, but they often went to bed hungry. She often worked with Aaron. He was easy to talk to and occasionally even got her to laugh.

Meanwhile, Clara had found a reason to laugh again. She met Matteo at a museum and was instantly smitten. At 26, she had begun to wonder if she would every marry. Since she was a little girl she had imagined her wedding day. She couldn’t stop smiling.

Matteo wasted no time and soon proposed. They married quickly without Clara knowing much about him.

Clara loved her new home and Matteo.

Judas had also found love. Ruby was young, still in high school, but he had never felt this way about anyone before.

Judas had always been different. He had trouble making friends, concentrating in school, and felt anxious around other people. He often made up stories and babbled to himself. He liked helping out with his siblings, but Joseph was hard on him and never treated him like his own children.

Ruby had a soft spot for the underdogs of the world and would stick up for those being bullied. She loved Judas just as he was and did not mind his sometimes odd behavior.

Ruby broke the news to Judas that she was expecting. Savanna invited her to move in. She liked that someone made Judas so happy. Although they were young, she was excited to be a grandmother.

Ruby invited her twin sister, Rose over. Rose was excited to be an aunt.
