Amy graduated high school with honors. She applied to many colleges and dreamed of becoming a doctor. She anxiously awaited for the mail to arrive each day.

Finally, the answer arrived. She opened the envelope with her mother watching. Holly crossed her fingers. She had given up her dream of being a doctor when she had married. She didn’t want to see her daughter give up her dreams, also.

“I got it!” cried Amy excitedly.

As usual, Gregory was lukewarm about Amy’s achievement. Instead, he focused on Bradley.

“See even your sister can get into a good college and into medical school. Your grades are unacceptable,” Gregory lectures his son once again.

Gregory hires a tutor for Bradley.

Bradley is not interested in becoming a doctor or intellectual pursuits. He prefers fitness. He loves being active.

Gregory pushes Bradley into taking college classes to help him get into medical school. Bradley relunctantly gives in. He struggles with chemistry. His grades are poor and he thinks of dropping out and how he will tell his father.

He goes on a skiing trip with friends and alcohol. He was glad to get away from his father’s nagging and studying. He can relax and have fun.

Holly’s happiness was short lived. She received a knock on her door. Policemen stood outside. Bradley was away on his ski trip.

“I’m so sorry,” started the policemen, “There was an accident.”

Holly sobbed as she learned that Bradley would not be coming home again.

Holly is furious with Gregory.

“You have one child that is passionate about becoming a doctor. That is not goo enough for you. You insist on the other child on becoming a doctor, whether he wants to or not. You pushed and pushed until you pushed him over the edge. Are you satisfied now?” Holly cries and then storms out of the room.

She mostly ignores Gregory. For the first time in their marriage, she does not make sure to be home when he gets back from work with a hot meal on the table. Gregory must make his own meals.

Holly gets a job in a nursing home and though it is not the doctor job she dreamed of, she is satisfied and feels productive. Gregory for the first time keeps his opinion to himself.
